- Sri Lanka Highlights
An island nation in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka lies off the southern coast of India. Relatively small in size, the country nonetheless offers an amazing array of attractions, both natural and cultural. A tranquil island where golden beaches and azure waters line the coast and verdant hills and cascading waterfalls dot the inland areas, Sri Lanka is truly diverse. With an ancient and complex history, the country still exhibits several cultural influences owed to yesteryear traders and missionaries. Today, the country has seen much modernization and immense infrastructural and technological advancement boasting millions of dollars of investments from multinational companies and yet it inherently remains the land where elephants walk along the roads and tea, coffee and rubber plantations dot the landscape.
When to go:
Sri Lanka boasts of tropical climate and hence is a year round destination. While areas near the ocean can be relatively humid most of the day, evenings are pleasant. And no need for winter clothing at any time during the year! However, the fierce monsoons in Sri Lankacan be a bit of a determent. So, the best time to visit is during the dry season - December to March for west coast, south coast and Hill Country and April to September for the east coast and ancient cities region. Though be prepared to see a large number of foreign tourists during the peak season
Local Transport:
SriLankan Air Taxi, the domestic arm of the national carrier Sri Lanka Airlines, connects major cities within the island nation. Sri Lanka also has a good network of roads as well as trains, thus offering a well connected public transport system. State run Sri Lankan Railways and Ceylon Transport Board are the key players for train and bus respectively while the country also has 430 km of inland waterways that are used for local transport. Taxis are readily available in the main cities.
